Our speaker, Lee Frelich, PhD is Director of Minnesota Center for Forest Ecology, has authored over 150 publications and is listed in the top 1% of all scientists in the area of science, environment and ecology. He has advised government agencies and mentored a generation of students. His research has been featured 550 times in news media. We are delighted to have Dr. Frelich share his insights on how our forests, and our cross-country skiing experiences, are affected by climate change.

January Monthly General Meeting
Regular Meeting at 6:30pm-8:30pm topic and Speaker:
Story of Norm Oakvik, co-founder of North Star Ski Touring Club.
Doug Edmonson, a former state ski champion, will talk about his new book, the "Inconspicuous Coach". It is the story of Norman Oakvik, a selfless Norwegian American who took time off each winter to help young skiers become champions. Norm Oakvik gave of himself for over 50 years, but he never took credit for these champions. He went on to coach countless North Star Ski Touring members and organized yearly lessons. He was the Inconspicuous Coach to many.
Doug will briefly discuss the history of Minnesota Nordic skiing from 1930s to 1980 and the state high school champions that became junior national, college, senior national champions and sometimes, Olympians and the coaches that helped them become great.
It is also the story of Oakvik‘s fellow competitors and how they succeeded but also gave back to Nordic skiing. People like John Burton, Charlie Banks, Mike Marciniak, Norm Kragseth, Lars Kindem, and many others that gave of themselves. Some of them were high school coaches and some of them were just part of the small fraternity of Nordic skiers.
The book should be available at www.bookpatch.com by early January. The meeting will be hybrid, in-person at the Danish American Center and via Zoom.
