Join us again for a fall hike at Wood Lake Nature Center in Richfield. Meet at 6:30 p.m. at the entrance to the park. Take either Lyndale Ave or 66th St to Lakeshore Drive; this will take your to the nature center. We will enjoy hot chocolate at Caribou Coffee Shop after the hike. FFI: Inez Wick, 612-825-3596, or Dana Siskind, 612-929-0205. Oct 12, Sun {A} Kirk Meyer Memorial Bike Ride (Rescheduled). Last SundayÕs event was rained out so weÕll try it one more time! Join us on this annual ride honoring the memory of our good friend and long-time North Star. This will be about a 40-mile ÒBÓ ride exploring the rolling secondary roads of northern Washington County Ð some of KirkÕs favorite biking terrain. There will be a planned rest stop at William OÕBrien State Park; please bring along lunch or a snack. WeÕll meet once again this year at 10:30 a.m. at SalÕs Family Bar & Restaurant in Withrow. Refreshments at SalÕs after the ride. Directions to Withrow: Highway 36 east to Manning Avenue (Cty Rd 15); north on Manning for 6+ miles to Cty Rd 7; left (west) on 7 for one mile to Cty Rd 9; then left (south) on 9 for two blocks to SalÕs. Please park in the large lot behind SalÕs or, if necessary, just up the road at the Withrow Ballroom. In the event of rain in the morning, the ride will be cancelled. Oct 14, Tue {A} General Club Meeting. 7:00-9:00 p.m. Socialize from 7-7:30 with the program, ÒTravel Ideas from Beth GauperÓ, beginning at 7:30. Same meeting place as last year: University Lutheran Church of Hope, 601 13th Avenue SE in Minneapolis, just west of Dinkytown and the U of M campus. Oct 15 Wed {WW} Chicken-in-a-Hubcap Ride. If you are ready to take on some hills, our annual Chicken-in-a-Hubcap ride is for you. Meet at 9:30 a.m. (ride at 9:45) at the bandstand parking lot in downtown Hudson, WI. Bring extra snacks and water as there are no water stops until we get to the Bass Lake Cheese Factory, well into the ride. After the ride we will go out for food and libations, of course! Beth Gauper, former travel writer for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, will present a program on travel ideas for Minnesota and the upper Midwest. The meeting is from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at University Lutheran Church of Hope, near Dinkytown and the U of M campus. NEW FALL SINGLES EVENT! Nov 1, Sat {S} Singles Hike and Chili Supper. French Regional Park, Plymouth. Join current North Star singles in welcoming our new single members. We will meet at 2:00 p.m. outside the Visitors Center to hike, followed by a chili (meat and veggie) supper. We have reserved the Oakwood Room in the Visitors Center from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. If you do not wish to hike, join us for the chili dinner. Cost is $7 in advance and $10 at the door. We request that you bring your own beverage (beer and wine are allowed). Fran takes over from retiring editor Anne McKinsey and the next issue of this newsletter will be her first. Mel Peterson and Anne will continue as back-up editors for the peripatetic Fran when she is off touring the globe. Welcome, Fran! =================================== SILENT SPORTS NEWS AND EVENTS =================================== BUCKTHORN REMOVAL IN LEBANON HILLS REGIONAL PARK In honor of national ÒMake a Difference Day,Ó the Dakota County VIP (Volunteer in Parks) Program is looking for volunteers to help remove buckthorn in this very popular regional park. The date is Saturday, October 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Meet at the Lebanon Hills Visitor Center, 860 Cliff Road in Eagan. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old, adults must accompany youth under the age of 16, and no experience is necessary. Order and content of the e-loype are governed by publication guidelines adopted by the NSSTC Board. The editor will determine the appropriateness of submissions in accordance with the guidelines. The editor reserves the right to edit submissions for clarity, format and length. NEW TRIPS OR EVENTS All NEW trips or events must be submitted to the TRIP COORDINATORS in order to be published in the e-loype. Existing trips and events may be modified by the trip leaders. Submit your trip or event information electronically through the North Star website ( www.north-stars.org) using the "Activity Scheduling Form," e-mail the trip coordinators at schedules@north-stars.org, or call Eric Ramstad, main trips coordinator (612-721-7643), or Pat Nelson, singles trips coordinator (952-893-1045).
